CONCEPT & PROCESS
Located in a 1980’s housing development, the existing home’s disjointed floor plan and excessively high vaulted popcorn ceilings made for a very uncomfortable and dated living environment.
To establish a more human scale upon entry, phase one of this design renovation offers a new slanted roofline that starts low and expands higher as it opens to the back of the property, overlooking the conservation land beyond. A central circulation spine frames an eclipsed view to the back, building anticipation as the occupant enters and moves through the home. The kitchen was expanded, and a wet bar was added to answer the owner’s love of cooking and entertaining while also serving as a knuckle, linking the main living and dining spaces within. A series of skylights, operable glass doors and windows, integrated planters, and indoor/outdoor spaces were created to address the owner’s desire for a living space that felt blended with nature.
Japanese joinery methods were employed in the custom furniture and kitchen island while a wood-screened terrace just off the main volume of the home establishes an intimate space that is open to the elements. The honesty of structure is on full display throughout the home while once-awkward level changes are built-in to the renovation in order to establish purposeful spaces for living and dining.
